Unlock Day: A movement for digital education in prisons
Edovo is launching its first-ever National Unlock Day on March 25, 2025, to expand digital education in prisons by encouraging people to share a 🔓 emoji on social media, with each post triggering a donation for one day of education. This blog outlines how you can get involved by spreading the word and posting the 🔓 emoji to unlock educational opportunities for incarcerated individuals.

On March 25, 2025, we at Edovo are launching our first-ever National Unlock Day—a bold initiative to expand access to education in correctional facilities across the country. It’s simple but impactful: by sharing a 🔓 emoji on social media, you can trigger a donation that will fund a full day of digital education for an incarcerated learner. This is our chance to make a massive difference in the lives of those who need it most.
What is Unlock Day?
Unlock Day is more than just a campaign—it's our collective call for awareness and social change. We’re asking people to flood social media with 🔓 emojis. With each emoji shared, we’re not only funding a day of education but also sparking important conversations about the urgent need for educational access in prisons. Did you know that nearly half of the incarcerated population still lacks access to digital learning opportunities? We want to change that, and with your help, we can bring transformative education to more learners behind bars.
At Edovo, our platform gives incarcerated individuals access to an extensive library of educational, vocational, and rehabilitative content—all through secure tablets. We’ve already reached nearly one million learners, but there are still millions left behind. Education in prison has been shown time and again to reduce recidivism and improve outcomes for people reentering society. By sharing a 🔓 emoji, you’ll be helping to give someone the tools they need to change their life.
Two Ways You Can Make a Difference
- Spread the Word: Share the news with your friends, family, and followers! The more people who know about Unlock Day, the more education we can unlock. Together, we can make a huge impact.
- Post the 🔓 Emoji on March 25: It’s as simple as it sounds. On March 25, post the 🔓 emoji with the hashtags #UnlockDay and #Edovo, and you’ll help fund one full day of education for someone incarcerated. It’s a small action that creates real change.
To make participation effortless, we've created a National Unlock Day Kit with ready-to-use sample posts, images, and key details. Just copy, paste, and post!
A Powerful Collaboration with Artist Halim Flowers
To make this day even more meaningful, we’re also launching limited-edition shirts designed by Halim Flowers, a formerly incarcerated artist and activist. During his time in prison, Halim found solace and purpose in art and literature, earning college credits through Georgetown University’s Prison and Justice Initiative. His designs for Unlock Day reflect his experience and the critical role education played in his transformation.
“Education was my lifeline in prison—it gave me purpose, direction, and the ability to rewrite my story,” says Halim. “I’m proud to support Edovo’s mission through my creative work, helping others have the same opportunity to grow, heal, and prepare for a future beyond incarceration.”
All proceeds from the shirts sold will go directly to support our mission to bring critical learning materials to those who need them most.
Voices for Change: Shaka Senghor and Jon-Adrian “JJ” Velazquez
We’re also honored to have powerful voices for change supporting Unlock Day. Shaka Senghor, a renowned author and advocate for the incarcerated, and Jon-Adrian “JJ” Velazquez, a formerly incarcerated actor and advocate who starred in Sing Sing, are both passionate about the transformative power of education in prisons.
“Funding education in prison will help people break free from the path that led them to incarceration,” says Shaka. “By posting an emoji today, you’re helping someone build a future of possibility.”
“Education gave me the tools to advocate for myself and others while incarcerated,” says JJ. “Supporting Unlock Day gives every incarcerated individual the chance to take control of their lives.”
Edovo’s Impact: A Vision for the Future
At Edovo, we are committed to creating scalable, tech-driven solutions that expand educational opportunities for justice-impacted individuals. Our platform offers more than 35,000 hours of content, covering academics, vocational skills, personal development, and reentry preparation. With over 50 million learning hours completed, we know we’re making an impact. But the work isn’t done yet.
We’re always pushing boundaries to create meaningful change in the justice system. For example, our partnership with A24 and Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA) helped bring Sing Sing to a million incarcerated learners, and we’re continuously finding new ways to improve correctional facility outcomes.
